S&P\u2019s U.S. indices are designed to reflect the U.S. equity markets and, through the markets, the U.S. economy. The S&P 500 focuses on the large-cap sector of the market; however, since it includes a significant portion of the total value of the market, it also represents the market. Companies in the S&P 500 are considered leading companies in leading industries. The S&P 500 is a member of the S&P Global 1200 family of indices.<\/p>\n

The S&P 500\u00ae has been\u00a0widely regarded as the best single gauge of the large cap U.S. equities market since the index was first published in 1957. The index has over US$ 5.58 trillion benchmarked, with index assets comprising approximately US$ 1.31 trillion of this total. The index includes 500 leading companies in leading industries of the U.S. economy, capturing 75% coverage of U.S. equities.<\/p>\n
