[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Slumps as Inflation Concerns Rattle Investors

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 507.60 (-0.9683%) points today, trading at 51,913.60, as market sentiment soured following a hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. This fresh economic data suggests that inflationary pressures remain more stubborn than the Federal Reserve anticipated, leading investors to recalibrate their expectations for interest rate cuts in the final quarter of the year. Dow Futures (YM=F) mirrored this bearish sentiment, as the contract was down 517.00 (-0.9780%) points to 52,344.00.

Leading the few gainers in the blue-chip index was 3M (MMM), which was up 3.70% to $148.62 following a favorable legal settlement update. Tech giant Nvidia (NVDA) also showed resilience, as it was up 1.77% to $225.00, while healthcare leader Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) was up 1.61% at $227.63. These defensive and growth-oriented moves provided a small cushion against the broader selling pressure triggered by the macroeconomic outlook.

Conversely, the prospect of prolonged high interest rates weighed heavily on industrial and consumer discretionary sectors. IBM (IBM) was down 2.42% to $213.40, making it one of the session's worst performers. Retail giant Home Depot (HD) was down 2.14% to $303.84, as investors feared higher borrowing costs would continue to dampen the housing and home improvement markets. Additionally, Salesforce (CRM) was down 1.64% to $168.45, reflecting a broader rotation out of high-valuation software stocks in the face of rising yields.
