[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Plummets as Inflation Concerns Rattle Investors

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 631.21 (-1.21%) points today, closing at 51,461.90. This sharp decline was mirrored in the futures market, as Dow Futures (YM=F) fell 623.00 (-1.19%) to 51,903.00. The primary narrative driving the sell-off was a hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released this morning, which fueled fears that the Federal Reserve may delay anticipated interest rate cuts. This economic data overshadowed corporate earnings, shifting the market focus toward a "higher-for-longer" monetary policy stance that pressured growth-sensitive sectors.

Despite the broad market retreat, 3M (MMM) emerged as the top performer, surging 3.70% to $148.62 following a positive analyst upgrade regarding its manufacturing efficiency. Tech giant Nvidia (NVDA) also showed resilience, gaining 1.77% to $225.01 as demand for AI infrastructure remains decoupled from broader macro concerns. Other notable gainers included Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which rose 1.61%, and Cisco Systems (CSCO), up 1.33%.

Conversely, the spike in Treasury yields heavily weighed on blue-chip laggards. IBM (IBM) led the losers, dropping 2.42% to $213.40, while Home Depot (HD) fell 2.14% to $303.85 on fears that sustained high rates will further cool the housing market. Software leader Salesforce (CRM) also faced pressure, declining 1.64% to $168.45. The financial sector saw similar headwinds, with American Express (AXP) and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) sliding 1.27% and 1.12% respectively as investors weighed the risks of an economic slowdown.
