[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Tumbles as Inflation Data Sparks Rate Hike Fears

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 565.39 (-1.19%) points today, currently trading at 46,851.88. This sharp market retreat was primarily triggered by a hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which revealed that inflationary pressures remain more persistent than economists anticipated. This data has effectively dampened hopes for a near-term pivot by the Federal Reserve, leading investors to price in a "higher-for-longer" interest rate trajectory. Dow Futures (YM=F) reflected this pessimistic sentiment, down 605.00 (-1.28%) points as Treasury yields climbed across the board.

The industrial and financial sectors were the hardest hit by the shift in economic outlook. Boeing (BA) was down 4.17%, leading the blue-chip decliners as concerns mounted over increased borrowing costs for the capital-intensive aerospace sector. Financial heavyweight Goldman Sachs (GS) was down 4.02%, and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) was down 2.19%, as the prospect of a slowing economy outweighed the benefits of higher lending margins. Other significant losers included 3M (MMM), which was down 3.74%, and Nike (NKE), down 2.86%, as consumer-facing brands faced renewed scrutiny.

Despite the broad sell-off, a few components managed to find green territory. Chevron (CVX) was up 3.16%, buoyed by rising crude oil prices. Salesforce (CRM) also outperformed, up 3.11% following positive sentiment surrounding its enterprise AI integrations. Defensive stocks saw modest inflows as a hedge against volatility; Travelers (TRV) was up 1.61%, while Walmart (WMT) was up 0.97%. Additionally, Coca-Cola (KO) and Verizon (VZ) both were up 0.35%, as traders rotated into stable, dividend-paying assets amidst the broader market uncertainty.
