(<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=VVUS\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/nasdaq\/today.aspx\">NASDAQ<\/a>:VVUS<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/94.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-4448\" title=\"Vivus Inc\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/smw-news-wp\/2011\/01\/94-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Vivus Inc\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a>) are surging over 90% in morning trade after the company said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee recommended its weight loss drug Qnexa be granted marketing approval by the FDA for the treatment of obesity in adults. The Committee voted\u00a020 to\u00a02, on the recommendation for an approval based on a favorable benefit-risk profile.<\/p>\n<p>While the FDA isn\u2019t required to follow the panel\u2019s recommendation, it often does. Several panel members said Qnexa would be prescribed for millions \u201cif not tens of millions\u201d of people, wrote Christopher James, a New York-based analyst for MLV &amp; Co., in a note to investors today. Once approved, Qnexa carries the potential to become \u201cthe next Lipitor,\u201d James wrote. Lipitor, made by New York- based Pfizer Inc.,(<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/nyse\/today.aspx\">NYSE<\/a>:PFE) is a cholesterol pill that had $10.7 billion in sales in 2010 before losing patent protection last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are pleased with the panel&#8217;s approval recommendation in support of the safety and efficacy of Qnexa,&#8221; said Peter Tam, President of VIVUS. &#8220;We look forward to working with the FDA as they complete their evaluation.
