(<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=AMZN\">NASDAQ: AMZN<\/a>) announced its fiscal first quarter earnings after-market close on Thursday that surpassed Wall Street Estimations, sending the company\u2019s shares sharply higher in trading today.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-25902\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Excluding one-time items, AMZN\u2019s first quarter earnings stood at 28 cents, down from 44 cents in the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p><!--Ad Injection mfunc mode ad code--><!--mfunc adshow_display_ad_file_v2(array('ad_random_1.txt'), array(100), array('align' => 'float right', 'clear' => '', 'margin_top' => '', 'margin_bottom' => '', 'padding_top' => '', 'padding_bottom' => ''), array(), array()) --><\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin-left:5px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - in News 300 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"5684630733\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p><!--\/mfunc--><\/p>\n<p>While net income came at $130 million, or 28 cents per share, down from $201 million or 44 cents per share a year earlier, the operating income slid to $192 million, from $322 million a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, revenue soared 34 percent to $13.2 billion, from $9.86 billion a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>According to a poll conducted by Thomson Reuters, analysts were expecting earnings of 7 cents a share after excluding items on revenue of $12.90 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting over the results, Ken Sena, an analyst at Evercore Partners, said to CNBC, \u201cI think the margins have a long way to go, but I think at least to see them moving in the right direction is an encouraging sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead at the second quarter, the company expects its net sales to be between $11.9 billion and $13.3 billion, an increase of between 20 percent and 34 percent compared with the second quarter in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>At last check, Amazon\u2019s shares were trading at $ 222.44, gaining almost 14% over the previous close.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon is an online retailer focusing on four different customer segments, which include consumers, sellers, enterprises and content creators.
