The company said that lower profits were due lower margins as the company was forced to cut prices amid rising competition; in addition the company also sold more low margins consumables in the quarter.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-29956\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Following the news, the shares plunged 3.2%, at $ 66.91 in midday intra trading.<\/p>\n<p><!--Ad Injection mfunc mode ad code--><!--mfunc adshow_display_ad_file_v2(array('ad_random_1.txt'), array(100), array('align' => 'float right', 'clear' => '', 'margin_top' => '', 'margin_bottom' => '', 'padding_top' => '', 'padding_bottom' => ''), array(), array()) --><\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;margin-left:5px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - in News 300 *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"5684630733\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 300;\ngoogle_ad_height = 250;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p><!--\/mfunc--><\/p>\n<p>The Company\u2019s sales soared 9.6 percent to $2.36 billion in the third quarter through May 26, mainly pushed by lower-income shoppers buying items such as milk and food from its small stores.<\/p>\n<p>The Company\u2019s gross margin dropped to 35.8 percent of sales in its third quarter. The pinch of price cuts was offset to some extent by sales of more profitable private brands. Family dollar expects private branding sector will boost its profits in the future.<\/p>\n<p>For the period, Family Dollar earned $124.5 million, or $1.06 per share in its fiscal third quarter, compared to a profit of $111.1 million or 91 cents in the same period, a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Family Dollar has faced stiff competition from rivals such as Dollar General Corp (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/nyse\/today.aspx\">NYSE<\/a>: DG) and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/nyse\/today.aspx\">NYSE<\/a>: WMT), both of these companies have been cutting margins in order to gain the market share.<\/p>\n<p>Family Dollar\u2019s same-store sales were below Dollar General&#8217;s most recent quarterly same-store performance.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting over Family Dollar\u2019s performance, BB&amp;T Capital Markets analyst Anthony Chukumba said that inconsistency in same stores sales showed it was \u201ceasier said than done for Family Dollar\u201d to catch up to Dollar General .<\/p>\n<p>Aiming for higher growth, Family Dollar is now planning to open more stores alongside adding more products to its shelves.<\/p>\n<p>In order to compete with Dollar General and other dollar store chains, Family Dollar recently launched several products such as health and beauty items, PepsiCo drinks, magazines and gift cards, in addition to cigarettes and other tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p>Family Dollar expects its profit in the current quarter will be between 71 cents per share and 81 cents per share, with same-store sales estimated to rise between 5 percent and 7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts surveyed by Reuters expect earnings of 77 cents per share in present quarter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"nr_clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"nrelate_popular_2\" class=\"nrelate nrelate_popular nrelate_default nr_1col nr_text\"><\/div>\n<p>\t<!--[if IE 6]>\n\t\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery('.nrelate_default').removeClass('nrelate_default');<\/script>\n\t<![endif]--><\/p>\n<p>\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\n\t\/* <![CDATA[ *\/\n\t\tnRelate.domain = \"thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news\";\n\t\tvar entity_decoded_nr_mp_url = jQuery('<span\/>').html(\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120629204328\/http:\/\/api.nrelate.com\/mpw_wp\/0.51.2\/?tag=nrelate_popular&domain=thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news&url=http%3A%2F%2Fthestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news%2Ffamily-dollar-earnings-fall-short-of-street-estimates-fdo%2F29956&nr_div_number=2&maxageposts=7200&increment=1\").text();\n\t\tnRelate.getNrelatePosts(entity_decoded_nr_mp_url);\n\t\/* ]]&gt;
