{"id":36917,"date":"2012-11-02T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T15:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-fall-sharply-silver-prices-also-tumble-3\/36916\/"},"modified":"2012-11-02T15:35:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-02T15:35:00","slug":"gold-prices-fall-sharply-silver-prices-also-tumble-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-fall-sharply-silver-prices-also-tumble-3\/36917\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Fall Sharply; Silver Prices also Tumble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> fell sharply in trading on Friday, dropping below $1,690 an ounce level for the first time in almost two months as better than expected nonfarm payrolls data for the month of October raised questions over how long the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> will continue with its latest bond buying program. <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> prices also tumbled in trading on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-36917\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gold had surged after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> announced a third round of quantitative easing back in September. The Fed had said back in September that it will buy $40 billion in mortgage backed securities every month until there is a significant recovery in the labor market. Since then data from the labor market and other economic indicators have pointed to a recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, the Labor Department reported that the U.S. economy added 171,000 jobs in October, beating consensus forecast of a gain of 125,000 jobs. On Thursday, a report from ADP showed that the private sector added 158,000 jobs in October. The strong data from the labor market has raised doubts over the longevity of the Fed\u2019s bond buying program and hence the sharp drop in gold prices.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, spot gold fell nearly 2% to $1,680 an ounce. Gold futures for delivery in December on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange slipped $40 to settle at $1,675.20 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Silver also tumbled on Friday. At last check, silver futures were down nearly 4%.<\/p>\n<p>In late trading on Friday, the iShares Silver Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=SLV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: SLV<\/a>) was down 4.10%, the ProShares Ultra Silver (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=AGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: AGQ<\/a>) was down 8.16%, and the ProShares UltraShort Silver (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=ZSL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: ZSL<\/a>) was up 7.84%.<\/p>\n<p>Platinum and palladium also fell sharply on Friday.
