{"id":39024,"date":"2012-12-17T14:24:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-17T14:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/boehner-indicates-republicans-ready-to-raise-taxes-on-wealthy-americans\/39022\/"},"modified":"2012-12-17T14:24:00","modified_gmt":"2012-12-17T14:24:00","slug":"boehner-indicates-republicans-ready-to-raise-taxes-on-wealthy-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/boehner-indicates-republicans-ready-to-raise-taxes-on-wealthy-americans\/39024\/","title":{"rendered":"Boehner Indicates Republicans Ready to Raise Taxes on Wealthy Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Despair was replaced with certain amount of optimism on Monday with both <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/nasdaq\/today.aspx\">Nasdaq<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/sp500\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"snp500 today\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> opening higher after House Speaker John Boehner, over the weekend, indicated that Republicans were ready to raise taxes on wealthy Americans, thus paving the way for further congressional\u00a0 negotiation, which, hopefully help in averting the \u2018fiscal cliff\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-39024\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, the big question now is whether the White House will offer some concessions on their part, especially on the issue of spending cuts on entitlement programs such as Medicare and social security.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the White House has only welcomed Republicans\u2019 latest policy shift but hasn\u2019t accepted the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report published in the CNBC, a source close to the White House said that President Obama has not accepted the proposal but refused to divulge any further details on Obama-Boehner talks.\u00a0 Besides, the source did not confirm whether any additional talks took place between President Obama and John Boehner on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>However, the source did mention that Mr. Boehner proposed extending low tax rates (Bush-era rate cuts) for everyone who has an annual income less than $1 million. In other words, taxes would rise for all those who have income above this threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this latest proposal, Boehner had insisted on extending all Bush-era\u2018s lower tax rates while President Obama had demanded to hike marginal rates on incomes that exceeded $250,000. Nevertheless, pressure mounted on Republicans as increasing numbers of business executives demanded a change in stance over the issue of tax hikes.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting over the development, Sean West, U.S. policy analyst at Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy, wrote in a note clients,\u00a0 \u201cBoehner&#8217;s offer to allow tax rates to go up for taxpayers earning over $1 million fundamentally transforms fiscal cliff negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe political burden is now shifted back to the president, who must be willing to take on his party in order to get a deal Boehner can ultimately pass. We do not think the president will overreach: Obama will work with Boehner to get to a deal,\u201d aadded West<\/p>\n<p>Echoing the same sentiment, Greg Valliere, chief political strategist at Potomac Research Group said to CNBC, \u201cBoehner has now accepted the premise of higher rates. So now we&#8217;re just arguing over details.
