{"id":43785,"date":"2013-04-19T08:16:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T08:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-extend-gains-silver-prices-also-jump\/43780\/"},"modified":"2013-04-19T08:16:00","modified_gmt":"2013-04-19T08:16:00","slug":"gold-prices-extend-gains-silver-prices-also-jump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-extend-gains-silver-prices-also-jump\/43785\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Extend Gains, Silver Prices Also Jump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\">Gold prices<\/a> rose more than 1% on Friday after the yellow metal breached $1,400 an ounce mark, triggering technical buying; nonetheless, it is on course to post fourth successive weekly loss after slumping to two-year low level on Monday. <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\">Silver prices<\/a> also edged higher on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-43785\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At last check, U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">gold<\/a> futures for June delivery climbed 1.37% to trade at $1,411.60 an ounce while spot gold jumped 1.54% to $1,412.16 an ounce. <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> futures leaped 1.57% to $23.61 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Gold prices were hammered on Monday after series of disappointing economic data releases from the U.S. and unexpectedly weak third quarter GDP data from the world\u2019s top 2 economy, China,\u00a0 fanned fears that global economy was losing its momentum, stoking deflation concerns, and triggering massive sell-off of industrial metals and other commodities.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, fears that Cypriot government\u2019s decision to sell bullion to cover part of its bailout requirements would serve as an example for other indebted countries also prompted investors cut positions in gold.<\/p>\n<p>Holdings of SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>), which is the world\u2019s largest gold-backed ETF, dropped to a three-year low level, earlier this week, a data provided by Reuters showed. The market is also abuzz with speculation that a longtime gold bull and well-known hedge fund manager, John Paulson might have unwounded his position.<\/p>\n<p>However, the sharp dip in prices boosted the physical-side in demand in Asia with dealers in Hong Kong and Singapore running out of gold bars and American coins on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting over the rebound in prices, one Singapore based dealer said to Reuters, \u201cPrices have suddenly jumped but I guess it&#8217;s because gold has broken the $1,400-level again. Technically, people are just buying up again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical buying from Thailand is not that strong, surprisingly.
