{"id":44129,"date":"2013-05-02T14:38:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-02T14:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-gain-silver-prices-also-edge-higher-2\/44125\/"},"modified":"2013-05-02T14:38:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T14:38:00","slug":"gold-prices-gain-silver-prices-also-edge-higher-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-gain-silver-prices-also-edge-higher-2\/44129\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Gain; Silver Prices Also Edge Higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold<\/a> futures settled higher on Thursday and recovered previous session\u2019s losses after the European Central Bank (ECB), in line with expectations, slashed benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to record low level of 0.50%, boosting metal\u2019s inflation hedge appeal. <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\">Silver prices<\/a> also rose sharply on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-44129\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>U.S. gold futures for June delivery gained $21.40, or 1.5%, to settle at $1,467.60 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange while spot gold was last up 0.75% to $1,467.60 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The decision from the ECB comes just a day after when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> reaffirmed its pledge to continue supporting the U.S. economy with its $85 billion worth monthly bond purchase program (quantitative easing \/QE3) and left the interest rate unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Central banks\u2019 extremely accommodating monetary policies stoke fears of currency debasement which in turn boosts the demand for inflation-hedge assets such as gold.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, the metal slumped more than 1%, which was its biggest one-day loss since the spectacular plunge in bullion prices recorded in mid-April. Spate of unexpectedly weak U.S. economic data releases and disappointing PMI data from China weighed on the sentiment in the previous session, triggering across-the-board sell-off.<\/p>\n<p>Physical-side demand eased<\/p>\n<p>The demand from Asia for physical metal subsided on Thursday. While\u00a0 markets in China reopened after remaining closed for Labor day Holidays on Thursday,\u00a0 the demand from Hong Kong was also significantly lower than what was witnessed a week before.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile holdings of the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>) continued to dwindle.
