{"id":44164,"date":"2013-05-03T14:48:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-03T14:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-gain-3\/44160\/"},"modified":"2013-05-03T14:48:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-03T14:48:00","slug":"gold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-gain-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-gain-3\/44164\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Settle Lower; Silver Prices Gain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">gold<\/a> futures edged lower on Friday as surprisingly strong non-farm payrolls data boosted the U.S. dollar against major traded currencies, making dollar-dominated commodities expensive. <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\">Silver prices<\/a>, meanwhile, edged higher on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-44164\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Stronger than expected job data also boosted investors\u2019 risk appetite, and hurt the precious metal\u2019s safe-haven appeal.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. gold futures for June delivery slipped $3.40, or 0.2%, to settle at $1,464.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. For the week, gold futures edged down 0.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Spot gold was last trading almost flat at $1,466.60, in electronic trading. Earlier today during Asian and European trading hours gold prices rallied as investors were edgy ahead of the Labor Department\u2019s non-farm payrolls data release. Investors feared that in case the employment number showed weakness then the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> might have come under more pressure to provide more economic stimulating measures. As a result, the U.S. dollar came under pressure.<\/p>\n<p>However, the U.S. dollar quickly pared its losses after the Labor Department\u2019s data showed that the U.S. economy added 165,000 new jobs in April against economists\u2019 expectation of 135,000 job creations. This in turn weighed on the demand for dollar-dominated commodities.<\/p>\n<p>Still, physical side demand from Asia continued to provide support.<\/p>\n<p>In a note to investors, Eugen Weinberg, an analyst at Commerbank said, \u201cGold reversed initial gains as we have a combination of stronger dollar and better sentiment towards the economy after the jobs data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut prices are still holding up well as there are still elements providing support, such as the strong physical demand and the implication of the ECB rate cut,\u201d added Weinberg.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> futures were last up 0.99% to almost $24 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>In late trading, the iShares Silver Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=SLV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: SLV<\/a>) was up 1%, and the ProShares Ultra Silver (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=AGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: AGQ<\/a>) was up 2.18%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nr_clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"nrelate_popular_2\" class=\"nrelate nrelate_popular nrelate_default nr_1col nr_text\"><\/div>\n<p>\t<!--[if IE 6]>\n\t\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery('.nrelate_default').removeClass('nrelate_default');<\/script>\n\t<![endif]--><\/p>\n<p>\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\n\t\/* <![CDATA[ *\/\n\t\tnRelate.domain = \"www2.thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news\";\n\t\tvar entity_decoded_nr_mp_url = jQuery('<span\/>').html(\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130505232402\/http:\/\/api.nrelate.com\/mpw_wp\/0.51.4\/?tag=nrelate_popular&domain=www2.thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww2.thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news%2Fgold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-gain-8%2F44164&nr_div_number=2&maxageposts=7200&increment=1\").text();\n\t\tnRelate.getNrelatePosts(entity_decoded_nr_mp_url);\n\t\/* ]]&gt;
