{"id":45192,"date":"2013-06-13T14:31:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T14:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-also-fall-3\/45187\/"},"modified":"2024-08-25T18:09:52","modified_gmt":"2024-08-25T18:09:52","slug":"gold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-also-fall-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-settle-lower-silver-prices-also-fall-3\/45192\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Settle Lower, Silver Prices Also Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> fell sharply on Thursday as pair of better-than-expected U.S economic data releases fuelled concerns that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a>, which is scheduled to hold its FOMC next week, could start decelerating the pace of economic stimulating measures. <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> prices also fell sharply in trading on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-45192\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both retail sales for May and weekly jobless claims data bettered analysts\u2019 expectations, underpinning the fact that the U.S, economy is rebounding&#8212; notwithstanding budget cuts in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed\u2019s ultra-loose monetary policy, especially after the credit crisis of 2008\/09, has been the key driving force behind gold\u2019s bull runs until 2012.<\/p>\n<p>However, with job market showing significant improvement lately, speculation is rising that the Fed would sooner than latter start tapering its $85 billion worth monthly bond purchase program, which in turn could weigh on the metal\u2019s inflation-hedge appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Just last week, non-farm payrolls data showed that the U.S. economy added more-than-expected jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a>\u2019s current round of quantitative easing or QE3 is explicitly tied to an improvement in the labor and housing market.<\/p>\n<p>A data provided by Reuters showed that gold prices are down about 27% after it touched a record high of $1,920 in September 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Gold futures for August delivery fell $14.20 or 1% to $1,377.80 an ounce while spot gold was last down 0.74% to $1,377.46 an ounce. In late trading, the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>) was down 0.87% to $133.08.<\/p>\n<p>Silver futures were last down 1.01% to $21.57 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the physical side demand in Asia remained weak.
