{"id":45287,"date":"2013-06-18T14:45:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-18T14:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-fall-more-than-1-silver-prices-also-edge-lower\/45266\/"},"modified":"2024-08-25T18:09:35","modified_gmt":"2024-08-25T18:09:35","slug":"gold-prices-fall-more-than-1-silver-prices-also-edge-lower","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-fall-more-than-1-silver-prices-also-edge-lower\/45287\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Fall More Than 1%; Silver Prices Also Edge Lower"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> fell more than more than 1% on Tuesday as edgy investors remained in sidelines ahead of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a>\u2019s policy rate statement on Wednesday. <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> prices also slipped in trading on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-45287\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>U.S. gold futures for August delivery fell $16.20 or 1.2% to settle at $1,366.90 an ounce while spot gold was last down 1.24% to $1,367.20 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed will conclude its two-day open market committee meeting (FOMC) on Wednesday. Market participants are expecting more clarity from the Fed over its multi-billion dollar bond purchase program.<\/p>\n<p>With U.S. macroeconomic indicators showing signs of gradual recovery in the economy, speculation is rife that the Fed could start tapering its bond purchase program sooner than later.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a>\u2019s ultra-loose monetary policy since 2008\/09 has boosted bullion\u2019s inflation- hedge appeal with prices peaking at $1,920 an ounce back in September 2011.<\/p>\n<p>However, the metal has been under pressure right through this year as better performing equity markets and rising uncertainty over when the Fed would start to wind down its economic stimulating measures prompted investors to shun safe-haven and inflation hedge bets.<\/p>\n<p>Year-to-date, the metal is down about 18%.<\/p>\n<p>Still, many strategists believe that Fed might wait little longer before its completely halts its\u00a0\u00a0 bond purchase program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold is trading weaker on the fear that the FOMC may reduce the volume (of QE3),\u201d said Peter Fertig, a consultant at Quantitative Commodity Research, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if anything they will be scaling out gradually, there will not be an abrupt end to QE,\u201d added Fertig.<\/p>\n<p>Silver futures were last down 0.47% to $21.65 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>In late trading, the iShares Silver Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=SLV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: SLV<\/a>) was down 0.81%, and the ProShares Ultra Silver (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=AGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: AGQ<\/a>) was down 1.45%.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"nr_clear\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"nrelate_popular_2\" class=\"nrelate nrelate_popular nrelate_default nr_1col nr_text\"><\/div>\n<p>\t<!--[if IE 6]>\n\t\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery('.nrelate_default').removeClass('nrelate_default');<\/script>\n\t<![endif]--><\/p>\n<p>\t<script type=\"text\/javascript\">\n\t\/* <![CDATA[ *\/\n\t\tnRelate.domain = \"www2.thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news\";\n\t\tvar entity_decoded_nr_mp_url = jQuery('<span\/>').html(\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130625011342\/http:\/\/api.nrelate.com\/mpw_wp\/0.51.4\/?tag=nrelate_popular&domain=www2.thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww2.thestockmarketwatch.com%2Fstock-market-news%2Fgold-prices-fall-more-than-1-silver-prices-also-edge-lower%2F45287&nr_div_number=2&maxageposts=7200&increment=1\").text();\n\t\tnRelate.getNrelatePosts(entity_decoded_nr_mp_url);\n\t\/* ]]&gt;
