{"id":45882,"date":"2013-07-12T14:23:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T14:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-settle-marginally-lower-silver-prices-also-slip-2\/45882\/"},"modified":"2024-08-25T18:09:09","modified_gmt":"2024-08-25T18:09:09","slug":"gold-prices-settle-marginally-lower-silver-prices-also-slip-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-settle-marginally-lower-silver-prices-also-slip-2\/45882\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Settle Marginally Lower; Silver Prices also Slip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> recovered from earlier losses to settle marginally lower on Friday and posted best weekly performance in almost two years as the metal\u2019s inflation-hedge appeal was burnished after the <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\">Silver prices<\/a> also edged lower in trading on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-45879\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gold futures for August delivery slipped 0.2% or $2.30 to settle at $1,277.60 an ounce while spot gold was last down 0.41% to $1,279.36 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>For the week, gold futures gained 5.4%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> futures were last down 0.73% to $19.81 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier during the day, (during Asian trading session), the metal prices fell sharply as the U.S. dollar strengthened while\u00a0 technical selling also ensued after the metal failed to cross its key resistance level of $1,300 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, traders said that the demand for physical gold in Asia also cooled off as buyers remained in sidelines after the metal clocked gains in last four sessions.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Bernanke said that the asset purchases program might continue for the time being. Separately, the Fed\u2019s minutes also showed that some policymakers were still not convinced that the U.S. labor was strong enough to warrant immediate pullback of the assets purchase program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also a lot of division within the Fed in terms of what the best approach towards bond-buying tapering is, so we may see the market jumping around as a result of that,\u201d said Daniel Smith, an analyst at Standard Chartered Bank, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>A data provided by Reuters showed that the holdings of the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>), the world\u2019s largest gold-backed ETF, remained unchanged at 30.192 million ounces on Thursday.
