{"id":46638,"date":"2013-08-15T07:32:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T07:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-extend-gains-silver-prices-climb-more-than-1-25\/46636\/"},"modified":"2013-08-15T07:32:00","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T07:32:00","slug":"gold-prices-extend-gains-silver-prices-climb-more-than-1-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-extend-gains-silver-prices-climb-more-than-1-25\/46638\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Extend Gains, Silver Prices Climb More than 1.25%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> extended gains during Asian trading hours on Thursday as the U.S. dollar traded broadly lower after the release of a very tepid producer price index in the previous session. <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\">Silver prices<\/a>, meanwhile, also rose sharply in early trading on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-46638\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The lack of inflationary presence has reignited speculation that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> might not decide against the tapering of the bond purchase program, in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>At last check, gold futures for December delivery edged up 0.40% to $1,338.70 an ounce while spot gold gained 0.26% to $1,338.04 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Wednesday, the Labor Department\u2019s Producer Price Index, a measure of inflation, showed that \u201ccore\u201d wholesale inflation, rose just 0.1% in July compared to economists\u2019 expectation for 0.2% increase.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the afternoon, St Louis Fed President James Bullard also pointed out that the inflation was still low and insisted that the Fed should stick to its 2% inflation target. However, he also warned of possible excessive inflation in the long-term.<\/p>\n<p>The weak data weighed on the dollar. The dollar index, a measure on U.S. unit\u2019s performance against six major currencies, fell 0.19% to 81.56 on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The news that holdings of the world\u2019s largest gold-backed ETF, the SPDR Gold Trust, rose for the second time in as many weeks also supported gold prices. The fund\u2019s holdings rose for the time since June on last Friday. Since then holdings remained mainly unchanged.
