{"id":46650,"date":"2013-08-15T13:46:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T13:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-jump-more-than-2-as-equities-plunge\/46645\/"},"modified":"2013-08-15T13:46:00","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T13:46:00","slug":"gold-prices-jump-more-than-2-as-equities-plunge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-prices-jump-more-than-2-as-equities-plunge\/46650\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold Prices Jump More Than 2% As Equities Plunge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> pared sharp losses and were heading towards a higher close in a very volatile session on Thursday as weakness in the U.S dollar and massive sell-off in U.S. equities encouraged investors to take safe-haven bets in hordes.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-46650\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At last check, gold futures for December delivery jumped 2.56% to $1,367.60 an ounce while spot gold jumped 1.96% to $1,360.71 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>) was last up 2.27% to $131.93<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> futures leaped 4.51% to $22.77 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>Bullion, having extended gains in the Asian trading session came under heavy sell-off pressure, tumbling more than 1% after the Labor Department said that the jobless claims fell to its lowest level in nearly last six years. The data boosted the U.S. dollar even as yields on treasuries soared. Investors feared that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> might soon begin to taper its gold supportive bond purchase program.<\/p>\n<p>However, some other economic indicators were unexpectedly weak. While the New York Fed\u2019s Empire State Manufacturing Index contracted in August, the Philadelphia Fed\u2019s data on the mid-Atlantic factory activities showed sharp slowdown as well. Besides, the industrial production also remained unchanged in July, said the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A spate of disappointing data releases along with lackluster earnings outlook from some of the prominent U.S. retail chains, sparked off panic sell-off across-the-board.
