The minutes of the Fed\u2019s July meeting did not provide any clear hints on when the central bank plans to start easing its $85 billion a month bond purchase program.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-46769\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/dowjones\/today.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Dow Jones Today\">Dow Jones<\/a> ended the day 0.70% lower at 14,897.55, the <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/sp500\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"snp500 today\">S&amp;P 500<\/a> ended the day 0.58% lower at 1,642.80, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.38% lower at 3,599.79.<\/p>\n<p>All sectors in the S&amp;P 500 ended the day in red. Basic Materials sector was the worst performer, ending the day 1.75% lower. Energy sector ended the day 0.70% lower. Financials fell 0.91%.<\/p>\n<p>Among the major movers on Wednesday included Diamond Foods Inc. (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=DMND\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASDAQ: DMND<\/a>), which ended the day 19.13% higher at $22.79, American Eagle Outfitters (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=AEO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: AEO<\/a>), which ended the day 9.89% lower at $14.76, and Staples Inc. (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=SPLS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASDAQ: SPLS<\/a>), which ended the day 15.29% lower at $14.27.<\/p>\n<p>On the economic front, a report released by the National Association of Realtors showed that existing home sales rose 6.5% in July to an annualized rate of 5.39 million, beating consensus forecast of an increase to 5.15 million units.<\/p>\n<p>European markets ended mostly lower on Wednesday, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.97% lower, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.34% lower.
