In late trading, the SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>) was up 0.39% to $132.60.<\/p>\n<p>Silver futures gained 0.35% to $23.09 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar index eased slightly\u00a0\u00a0 even as yields on benchmark U.S. 10-year treasury dropped after the Labor Department said that weekly first time claims climbed by 13,000 last week to seasonally adjusted 336,000&#8211; which was slightly higher than analysts\u2019 consensus estimate.<\/p>\n<p>The higher-than-expected jobless claims raised hopes that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> might wait little longer before its starts winding down the quantitative easing.<\/p>\n<p>Following the release of FOMC minutes on Wednesday, speculation was rife that the Fed could begin the tapering of bond purchase program by September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough you still have a fairly low number of claims, the market seems to be concentrating on the fact that there was still an increase last week, which is definitely the reason for gold&#8217;s strength,\u201d said Christin Tuxen, an analyst at Danske Bank, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today (during Asian trading hours), the dollar traded sharply higher against major traded currencies as investors repatriated capital from emerging markets, fearing early tapering of asset purchases. The yield on 10-year benchmark U.S. treasury touched almost 3.00% on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>As tapering of the asset purchases will spike <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/bonds\/today.aspx\">interest rates<\/a>, bullion will come under pressure since it\u2019s a non-interest bearing asset.
