{"id":47239,"date":"2013-09-13T10:43:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-13T10:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/forex-market-update-dollar-index-up-despite-weak-economic-data\/47230\/"},"modified":"2013-09-13T10:43:00","modified_gmt":"2013-09-13T10:43:00","slug":"forex-market-update-dollar-index-up-despite-weak-economic-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/forex-market-update-dollar-index-up-despite-weak-economic-data\/47239\/","title":{"rendered":"Forex Market Update: Dollar Index Up Despite Weak Economic Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>In spite of a release of\u00a0 two disappointing U.S. macroeconomic indicators, the dollar index remained higher on Friday as investors still expect the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> to start winding down its quantitative easing ($85 billion worth bond purchase program) from September.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-47239\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The dollar Index, a gauge on U.S. unit\u2019s performance vis-\u00e0-vis a basket of six major currencies, rose 0.15% to 81.65<\/p>\n<p>The WSJ Index, which uses a bit broader indexing criteria, edged up 0.09% to 73.87<\/p>\n<p>The euro was last down 0.26% against the dollar to trade at $1.3264.<\/p>\n<p>Easing concerns over Syria also supported the dollar. Both Russia and the U.S. said that international community should push for an early resolution on Syria which will ensure an end to a civil-war. Separately, Damascus also entered an anti-chemical arms convention. Yen, which is regarded as highly liquid <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/currency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">currency<\/a>, tends to benefit in the times of geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n<p>However, the yen was up 0.17% against the dollar to trade at yen99.37.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, the Commerce Department said that the retail sales edged up only 0.2% in August, which was below economists\u2019 forecast for 0.4% gain. In July, retail sales increased 0.4%. Core retail sales, which do not include automobile, gasoline and building materials, rose 0.2%, after rising 0.5% in July.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. consumer sentiment fell sharply in September, according to Thomson Reuters\/ University of Michigan\u2019s preliminary reading.
