{"id":47621,"date":"2013-10-02T08:29:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T08:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-silver-prices-edge-higher\/47618\/"},"modified":"2013-10-02T08:29:00","modified_gmt":"2013-10-02T08:29:00","slug":"gold-silver-prices-edge-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.stockmarketwatch.com\/stock-market-news\/gold-silver-prices-edge-higher\/47621\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold, Silver Prices Edge Higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\ngoogle_ad_client = \"ca-pub-1408583772585547\";\n\/* SMW - News Links *\/\ngoogle_ad_slot = \"3490797620\";\ngoogle_ad_width = 468;\ngoogle_ad_height = 15;\n\/\/-->\n<\/script><br \/>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/show_ads.js\">\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/gold-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"gold price today\">Gold prices<\/a> edged higher during Asian trading hours on Wednesday but remained below $1,300 an ounce and hovered near its two-month low level as the metal\u2019s safe-haven appeal failed to burnish with investors believing that partial shutdown might be short-lived. <a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\">Silver prices<\/a> have also edged higher in early trading on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-47621\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At last check, gold futures for December delivery edged up 0.65% to $1,294.40 an ounce while spot gold added 0.61% to $1,293.79 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The SPDR Gold Trust (ETF) (<a href=\"https:\/\/thestockmarketwatch.com\/stock.aspx?stock=GLD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NYSE: GLD<\/a>) was up 0.25% in <a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/markets\/pre-market\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Premarket Movers\">premarket<\/a> trading to $124.90.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockmarketwatch.com\/metal\/silver-price.aspx\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"silver price today\">Silver<\/a> futures gained 0.47% to $21.27 an ounce.<\/p>\n<p>The metal plunged more than 3% on Tuesday after it broke below the key psychological support level of $1,300, triggering technical sell-off.\u00a0 Large scale liquidations were also seen as investors chose to hold cash fearing macroeconomic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Reuters, a Hong Kong based precious metal dealer said, \u201cA lot of people are scratching their heads because of the aggressive selling. It was a big surprise as no one was expecting this reaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Year-to-date, the metal is down about 23%.<\/p>\n<p>In general, macroeconomic uncertainty tends to drive up the demand for safe-haven assets such as gold but market participants expect that lawmakers will try to find out a stop-gap solution for the budget before the next key mid-October deadline.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor which is weighing on the sentiment is increasing possibility that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowfinance.com\/federal-reserve-system-fed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve<\/a> could start winding down its gold-supportive bond purchase program before the year-end. Lately, U.S. macroeconomic indicators, especially the labor market data showed significant improvement in the economy.
