An Amazon engineering leader cited a <em>lack of strong customer demand<\/em> and the relative maturity of NVIDIA\u2019s software ecosystem (CUDA) as factors, implying many AI developers still prefer NVIDIA GPUs despite AMD\u2019s cheaper hardware. <em>\u201cWe follow customer demand\u2026 [if] strong indications [emerge], then there\u2019s no reason not to deploy [AMD Instinct GPUs],\u201d<\/em> said Gadi Hutt of AWS\u2019s Annapurna Labs, adding that so far interest had not justified it. Both deals were unveiled the same day, signaling that Amazon and AMD are expanding AI infrastructure <em>in parallel<\/em> on the world stage (alongside NVIDIA, which will also supply thousands of GPUs to Saudi). Such coordinated efforts underscore that AMD and AWS are aligned in promoting a more open, diversified AI hardware ecosystem globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amazon\u2019s Equity Stake in AMD:<\/strong> Perhaps the clearest signal of Amazon\u2019s strategic alignment with AMD came in 2025 when it was revealed that Amazon had quietly acquired a stake in AMD. It could also presage closer collaboration on chip R&amp;D or preferential access to AMD\u2019s future AI products. While there\u2019s no indication Amazon intends to acquire AMD outright (such an enormous takeover would face major regulatory hurdles), the partnership is clearly deepening. AMD is now a <strong>\u201cgreat partner for AWS,\u201d<\/strong> according to Amazon\u2019s silicon executives, who emphasize that AWS already <em>\u201csells a lot of AMD CPUs to customers\u201d<\/em> and will evaluate AMD\u2019s GPUs as they evolve. The strategic logic is compelling: if AMD\u2019s upcoming Instinct accelerators can narrow the gap with NVIDIA, AWS could deploy them at scale \u2013 giving Amazon leverage to negotiate better prices and avoid potential supply constraints that come with a single-vendor (NVIDIA) strategy.<\/p>\n<p>In summary, AMD represents the <strong>hardware layer<\/strong> of Amazon\u2019s envisioned AI stack where Amazon doesn\u2019t yet dominate on its own. By <strong>partnering with and investing in AMD<\/strong>, Amazon gains a second source of advanced chips and aligns itself with the only credible GPU challenger to NVIDIA\u2019s hegemony. Coupled with Amazon\u2019s in-house Trainium\/Infernia chips, AWS now has <em>multiple arrows in its quiver<\/em> for AI hardware \u2013 it can mix and match its own silicon, AMD accelerators, and NVIDIA GPUs to meet customer needs and optimize costs. This flexibility is a strategic advantage as AI demand explodes. As one market watcher quipped, <em>\u201cthe second-prettiest girl at the prom [AMD] might be the best date after all\u201d<\/em> when it comes to AI chips \u2013 underscoring that being #2 in a booming market can still be extremely lucrative. Amazon\u2019s support may ensure that AMD firmly remains that #2 and a key player in the AI future.<\/p>\n<h2>Anthropic: Amazon\u2019s Bet on Foundation Models<\/h2>\n<p>If AWS and chips are the infrastructure of AI, <strong>foundation models<\/strong> are the brains running on that infrastructure. Recognizing the importance of having cutting-edge AI models, Amazon in 2023 made a headline-grabbing investment in <strong>Anthropic<\/strong>, a San Francisco-based AI startup founded by former OpenAI researchers. Anthropic is known for its <em>Claude<\/em> large language model \u2013 a direct competitor to OpenAI\u2019s GPT-4 \u2013 and for its focus on AI safety and research. Amazon\u2019s involvement with Anthropic is a strategic gambit to ensure it has a stake in the <em>\u201cfuture of AI brains\u201d<\/em> that will power applications and services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>$4B for a Cloud Partnership (2023):<\/strong> In late September 2023, Amazon announced it would invest up to <strong>$4 billion<\/strong> in Anthropic for a minority stake in the company. The deal, finalized in two stages, gave Amazon an initial <strong>$1.25 billion<\/strong> equity injection in 2023 and the option to increase to the full $4B over time. In return, Amazon would offer Anthropic\u2019s models (like Claude) to AWS customers via Amazon Bedrock and integrate them deeply into AWS\u2019s AI portfolio. Essentially, Anthropic became to Amazon what OpenAI is to Microsoft \u2013 a preferred AI model partner. By tying Anthropic\u2019s compute needs to AWS, Amazon would benefit from increased cloud usage and showcase AWS\u2019s capability to handle state-of-the-art AI training. And by securing priority access to Anthropic\u2019s models, Amazon could ensure AWS offers some of the best generative AI to its customers. <em>\u201cAnthropic\u2026 has made a long-term commitment to provide AWS customers around the world with access to future generations of its foundation models on Amazon Bedrock,\u201d<\/em> Amazon noted when the deal was announced.<\/p>\n<p>This partnership paid almost immediate dividends. In 2023\u201324, Anthropic rapidly advanced its Claude model. By early 2024 it released <strong>Claude 2<\/strong> (an improved LLM with 100k token context window), and by late 2024, <strong>Claude 3<\/strong> was introduced. Amazon quickly integrated these into Bedrock. In fact, Amazon touted that Claude 3 <em>\u201chas set a new standard, outperforming other models available today \u2014 including OpenAI\u2019s GPT-4 \u2014 in the areas of reasoning, math, and coding,\u201d<\/em> according to Anthropic\u2019s own industry benchmarks. Whether Claude 3 is truly superior on all fronts can be debated, but clearly Amazon believes Anthropic\u2019s research is top-tier and wants to make it easily accessible on AWS. Dozens of AWS customers, from startups to large enterprises (e.g. Bridgewater, Pfizer, LexisNexis, Siemens, and more), began using Claude via Bedrock in 2023\u201324. This validates Amazon\u2019s strategy of investing in Anthropic: it attracted AI-hungry clients to AWS, who may have otherwise looked to OpenAI or rival clouds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doubling Down to $8B (2024):<\/strong> Less than a year after the initial deal, Amazon decided to <em>double down<\/em>. In November 2024, Amazon announced <strong>another $4 billion<\/strong> investment into Anthropic. This came in the form of convertible notes, with an initial $1.3B upfront and the rest over time. It effectively <strong>doubled Amazon\u2019s total commitment to $8 billion<\/strong>, solidifying its position as Anthropic\u2019s largest stakeholder (still a minority owner, but a very significant one). Anthropic remained independent and even sought additional investors alongside Amazon, but the message was clear: Amazon is <em>all-in<\/em> on this alliance. <em>\u201cThe investment in Anthropic is essential for Amazon to stay in a leadership position in AI,\u201d<\/em> said one Wall Street analyst, highlighting how critical this was viewed for Amazon\u2019s competitive stance. Indeed, Amazon\u2019s cloud rivals Microsoft and Google each have direct access to leading models (OpenAI\u2019s GPT for Microsoft, Google\u2019s own PaLM models for itself), and Amazon could not afford to be left without a champion model. With Anthropic, Amazon has that champion.<\/p>\n<p>The expanded deal in late 2024 reinforced the earlier partnership terms. Anthropic <strong>\u201cgradually established [AWS] as [its] primary cloud partner,\u201d<\/strong> and AWS in turn became a <em>\u201cmajor distributor\u201d<\/em> of Anthropic\u2019s models, bringing substantial revenue to Anthropic through AWS\u2019s Bedrock service. Importantly, Anthropic also began working <em>\u201cclosely with [Amazon\u2019s] Annapurna Labs\u201d<\/em> on future chip development.
