A bastion of rational thought, predictable trends, and calm, measured reactions. Or, at least, that’s what the textbooks tell us. In the era of Donald J. Trump, however, it’s less a bastion and more a rollercoaster designed by a mischievous deity with a penchant for abrupt turns and dizzying drops, often followed by inexplicable surges. The latest round of announcements from the former (and potentially future) President has once again sent analysts scrambling, tickers twitching, and investors wondering if their portfolios need a therapist or just a stiff drink.

The Semiconductor Shuffle: 100% Tariffs with a Local Loophole

The headline grabber this week, fresh off the presidential podium, was the pronouncement of a whopping 100% tariff on imported computer chips and semiconductors. One might imagine a collective gasp from the tech world, but fear not, for the plot, as always, thickens. The tariffs, we’re told, come with a rather convenient carve-out: companies “building in the United States” or those “committed to build” domestically will be spared this punitive levy. It’s almost as if the policy is designed to encourage a specific outcome, rather than, say, just taxing things for the fun of it.

The immediate market reaction was, predictably, a mixed bag of bewildered sighs and opportunistic cheers. In early Asian trading, chip-related shares took a hit. Japan’s Tokyo Electron plunged 3.4%, while chipmaker Renesas was down 2.5%. In Seoul, South Korean chip giant SK Hynix (000660.KS) saw its shares dive 2.9%. Even Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) initially fell 1.6% in Asian trading. Malaysian semiconductor companies like Frontken, Pentamaster, and Unisem also found themselves on the backfoot.

However, once the “build in US” exemption became clearer, a different narrative emerged. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, saw its shares jump nearly 5% in early trade after Taipei confirmed its exemption due to existing and planned US facilities. Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) also rebounded, gaining 2% after confirming its exemption. It appears that a quick pledge to build a factory in America is the new “get out of tariff free” card. Nvidia (NVDA), the AI chip behemoth, also saw its stock rise slightly in extended trading, adding to a staggering $1 trillion gain in market value since the start of Trump’s second administration. Its stock approached $180, hitting fresh record highs after CEO Jensen Huang’s meeting with President Trump, which reportedly led to regaining partial access to the Chinese market for its H20 chips. Even Micron Technology (MU) and Intel (INTC), which had seen earlier dips, rose in after-hours trading, with Micron up 4.06%.

The broader US market, ever the optimist (or perhaps just perpetually confused), seemed to shrug off the initial tariff jitters. On Wednesday, the Nasdaq Composite (NDX) surged 1.21%, the S&P 500 (SPX) added 0.7%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained 0.2%. This, mind you, was despite earlier tariff announcements on August 5th that saw the Dow fall 1.2% (530-540 points), the S&P 500 drop 1.6%, and the Nasdaq slide over 2%. One could almost conclude that the market has developed a selective hearing problem when it comes to presidential pronouncements – bad news is absorbed quickly, good news is celebrated, and contradictory news is simply… processed. The US dollar, however, wasn’t so sanguine, weakening 0.7% overnight against a basket of currencies due to the chip tariff threat.

Apple’s Grand American Reinvestment: A Timely Coincidence?

In a move that could only be described as exquisitely timed, Apple (AAPL) announced an additional $100 billion investment in US manufacturing, bringing its total domestic commitment to a cool $600 billion over the next four years. This announcement came with Apple CEO Tim Cook standing right alongside President Trump in the Oval Office, a picture-perfect tableau of corporate patriotism. The timing, just as 100% tariffs on semiconductors were being threatened, was, of course, purely coincidental. Or perhaps, a masterclass in strategic corporate diplomacy.

Unsurprisingly, Apple‘s stock reacted with unbridled enthusiasm. Shares jumped over 5% on Wednesday, closing at $213.28 apiece, and gained another 3% in extended trading. Analysts were quick to praise the move, noting it would help Apple sidestep potential tariffs on iPhones and was a clear “olive branch” to the administration. It seems the cost of avoiding tariffs is merely a few hundred billion dollars in domestic investment. A small price to pay for peace of mind, apparently.

India’s Tariff Tango: A 50% Problem

While some companies were busy making grand investment pledges, other nations found themselves on the receiving end of a different kind of presidential decree. India, in particular, was hit with an additional 25% tariff on its imports, bringing the total tariff burden to a staggering 50% (on top of an existing 25% duty). The stated reason? India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil. The new tariffs are set to take effect after a 21-day grace period, starting August 27, 2025, allowing for a brief window of negotiation, or perhaps, a frantic search for new trade partners.

The Indian stock market reacted with a predictable dip. The Nifty50 opened below 24,550, down 0.21% (51 points), while the BSE Sensex fell around 0.18% (150 points). Analysts from HDFC Securities expected a 1-2% “knee-jerk reaction,” though they optimistically hoped for a resolution. Export-oriented sectors in India, such as textiles, gems & jewellery, and auto components, are expected to bear the brunt of these increased duties. India’s Foreign Ministry, with a touch of diplomatic exasperation, called the move “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,” pointing out that India’s refiners act based on market factors and national energy security needs. Adding to the geopolitical fun, President Trump also hinted at similar tariffs for China if it continues its Russian oil purchases. Because nothing says “stable global trade” like a perpetual game of tariff roulette.

The Perpetual Policy Pendulum

Beyond the semiconductor and Indian sagas, the Trump administration’s tariff policy continues its broad sweep. Canada saw its tariffs raised to 35% from 25%. Switzerland, a nation typically associated with neutrality and fine watches, is now facing a rather un-neutral 39% tariff, up from 31%, with its president reportedly leaving Washington empty-handed after attempts to negotiate. Brazil is also grappling with a 50% total tariff. Indeed, new tariffs ranging from 10% to 41% are now in effect on imports from approximately 70 countries. It’s a grand experiment in economic re-engineering, or perhaps, just a very loud way of saying “America First,” one tariff at a time.

The market, in its infinite wisdom, continues to dance to this unique tune. While major US indices like the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq showed resilience on Wednesday, the underlying volatility and uncertainty remain. Analysts are left to interpret the daily pronouncements, often finding themselves in the unenviable position of explaining how a 100% tariff can be both devastating and beneficial, depending on who’s building what, where, and with whom. The “Trump effect” on stock markets isn’t about fundamental economics as much as it is about navigating a landscape where policy can shift faster than a tweet can be composed. For investors, it’s a constant reminder that in this market, the only certainty is the unpredictable nature of the showman-in-chief.

DISCLAIMER: We read Trump’s posts so you don’t have to.
