Security Minister Dan Jarvis has instructed academics to "end all arrangements" with the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), citing a direct threat to national security.

The intelligence agency revealed that more than 100 UK-linked researchers have worked on projects secretly funded by Beijing. These collaborations focused on critical technologies, including artificial intelligence, steganography, and cybersecurity systems. MI5 warned that such research is being used to enhance China's technical capacity for espionage against the West.

The Chinese Embassy in London has vehemently rejected these claims, labeling them "imaginary and purely fabricated." However, the UK government has reminded institutions that continuing these ties could lead to criminal prosecution under the National Security Act 2023.

Trump Blames Zelenskyy for Stalled Peace Talks

In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday that Ukraine needs a "new leader" to reach a settlement with Russia. Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed that Vladimir Putin "strongly" desires a settlement, whereas Volodymyr Zelenskyy is purportedly resisting a compromise.

Trump’s comments follow a heated exchange over a new U.S.-Russia diesel agreement. The Trump administration moved to ease sanctions on Russian fuel to combat soaring energy prices, a move Zelenskyy described as "terrible" and "not honest." The Ukrainian president alleged that his peace negotiating team in Florida was used as a "smokescreen" while the fuel deal was being finalized.

Energy Crisis Drives Wedge in U.S.-Ukraine Alliance

The diplomatic rift is increasingly fueled by economic pressures in the United States. Trump has publicly ordered Zelenskyy to stop hitting Russian oil refineries, stating, "He better damn well stop." The U.S. administration argues these strikes contribute to global diesel shortages that impact American farmers and ranchers.

Reports indicate that Zelenskyy ignored at least six U.S. requests to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. In response, the U.S. Treasury Department authorized the shipment of Russian diesel to global markets. Analysts suggest that Trump’s prioritization of domestic fuel prices over sanctions pressure marks a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy toward the 4.5-year conflict.

Key Takeaways UK universities are urgently reviewing
