[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Gains Momentum Amid Manufacturing Data and Tech Resilience

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was up 268.71 (0.51%) points today, reaching a level of 53,035.59. Market sentiment was primarily driven by a stronger-than-expected ISM Manufacturing PMI report for August, which signaled robust industrial expansion and bolstered investor confidence in a "soft landing" for the U.S. economy. This macroeconomic optimism offset lingering concerns regarding interest rate trajectories, allowing the blue-chip index to maintain steady gains throughout the session. Simultaneously, Dow Futures (YM=F) was up 269.00 (0.51%) points, mirroring the positive momentum in the cash market.

Leading the surge was 3M (MMM), which was up 3.70% to $148.62 following a favorable legal settlement update that cleared significant long-term liabilities. The technology sector provided additional support as Nvidia (NVDA) was up 1.77% to $225.01 and Cisco Systems (CSCO) was up 1.33% to $100.48, driven by continued enterprise spending on AI infrastructure. Defensive plays also saw interest, with healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) up 1.61% to $227.63 and UnitedHealth Group (UNH) up 1.00% to $399.64.

Conversely, the index faced pressure from the industrial and retail sectors. IBM (IBM) was down 2.42% to $213.40 after a brokerage downgrade citing valuation concerns. Consumer-facing stocks struggled as Home Depot (HD) was down 2.14% to $303.85 and Salesforce (CRM) was down 1.64% to $168.45. Financials were mixed, but American Express (AXP) was down 1.27% and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) was down 1.12%, as investors rotated out of cyclical banking stocks into high-growth tech and defensive healthcare names.
