[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Plummets as Economic Uncertainty Weighs on Blue-Chip Stocks

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 628.18 (-1.17%) points today, closing at 52,786.07. This sharp decline was mirrored in the futures market, where Dow Futures (YM=F) fell 632.00 (-1.18%) points to 52,808.00. The primary narrative driving the sell-off was a combination of stagnating economic data and a shift in investor sentiment toward defensive positioning. Market participants reacted to cooling labor market indicators, which raised concerns about the pace of domestic growth heading into the final quarter of the year.

Despite the broad market retreat, 3M Company (MMM) emerged as the top performer, surging 3.70% to $148.62 following a positive analyst upgrade regarding its operational restructuring. Other notable gainers included Nvidia (NVDA), which rose 1.77% to $225.01, and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which climbed 1.61% to $227.63. Tech and networking stalwart Cisco Systems (CSCO) also bucked the trend, gaining 1.33% to finish at $100.48.

Conversely, the index was dragged down by significant losses in the industrial and technology sectors. IBM (IBM) was among the biggest laggards, falling 2.42% to $213.40, while Home Depot (HD) dropped 2.14% to $303.85 amid fears of slowing consumer discretionary spending. Salesforce (CRM) also faced pressure, declining 1.64% to $168.45. The financial sector saw broad weakness as well, with American Express (AXP) shedding 1.27% and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) sliding 1.12% by the closing bell.
