[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Slides as Inflation Concerns and Tech Volatility Weigh on Markets

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 405.41 (-0.7680%) points today, closing at 52,380.66. Market sentiment was primarily driven by a hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which fueled concerns that the Federal Reserve may maintain elevated interest rates longer than previously anticipated. This macroeconomic pressure was compounded by a late-session sell-off in heavyweight technology and industrial components, leading Dow Futures (YM=F) to also finish lower, down 369.00 (-0.6984%) points.

Despite the broader decline, 3M (MMM) emerged as the top performer, surging 3.70% to $148.62 following a positive analyst upgrade regarding its streamlined manufacturing operations. Other notable gainers included Nvidia (NVDA), which rose 1.77% to $225.01, and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), climbing 1.61% to $227.63. Investors appeared to rotate into defensive healthcare names, with UnitedHealth Group (UNH) gaining 1.00% and Cisco Systems (CSCO) adding 1.33% as a hedge against volatility.

Conversely, the index was dragged down by significant losses in the tech and retail sectors. IBM (IBM) was the biggest laggard, dropping 2.42% to $213.40 after a cautious quarterly outlook. Home Depot (HD) fell 2.14% to $303.85 as high mortgage rates continued to dampen home improvement spending. Other major decliners included Salesforce (CRM), which shed 1.64%, and Sherwin-Williams (SHW), falling 1.36%, reflecting broader investor anxiety over corporate earnings growth in a high-rate environment.
