[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Slumps as Economic Uncertainty Weighs on Blue-Chip Stocks

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 297.67 (-0.5779%) points today, trading at 51,213.92. This downward pressure was mirrored in the derivatives market, where Dow Futures (YM=F) was down 284.00 (-0.5475%) points. The primary narrative driving the market today centered on renewed inflation concerns following a hotter-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report. This data has sparked fears that the Federal Reserve may maintain elevated interest rates longer than previously anticipated, dampening investor appetite for cyclical and growth-sensitive blue-chip equities.

Despite the broader index decline, 3M Company (MMM) emerged as the top performer, as it was up 3.70% to $148.62 following a positive legal settlement update. Tech giant Nvidia (NVDA) also showed resilience, as it was up 1.77% to $225.01, benefiting from continued momentum in the artificial intelligence sector. Other notable gainers included Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which was up 1.61%, and Cisco Systems (CSCO), which was up 1.33% to $100.48. These defensive and tech-oriented gains provided a small buffer against the day's significant selling pressure.

Conversely, the technology and retail sectors faced heavy headwinds. IBM (IBM) led the laggards, as it was down 2.42% to $213.40, while Home Depot (HD) was down 2.14% to $303.85 as high interest rates continue to threaten the housing and home improvement markets. Software leader Salesforce (CRM) was down 1.64%, and Sherwin-Williams (SHW) was down 1.36%. Financial heavyweights also struggled under the weight of economic uncertainty, with American Express (AXP) down 1.27% and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) down 1.12% to $301.51.
