[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Slumps as Inflation Concerns Rattle Markets

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 631.21 (-1.21%) points today, Wednesday, September 16th, 2026, closing at 51,461.90. Market sentiment turned sharply negative following a higher-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which fueled fears that the Federal Reserve might delay anticipated interest rate cuts. This inflationary narrative dominated the trading session, causing Dow Futures (YM=F) to also slide by 618.00 (-1.18%) as investors recalibrated their risk exposure in a high-rate environment.

Despite the broad sell-off, 3M Company (MMM) emerged as the top performer, surging 3.70% to $148.62 following a positive legal settlement update. Tech giant Nvidia (NVDA) also showed resilience, gaining 1.77% to reach $225.01, while healthcare staple Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) climbed 1.61% to $227.63 as investors sought defensive positioning. Other notable gainers included Cisco Systems (CSCO), which rose 1.33%, and UnitedHealth Group (UNH), up 1.00%.

Conversely, the tech and retail sectors bore the brunt of the downturn. IBM (IBM) was the biggest laggard, falling 2.42% to $213.40. Consumer-sensitive stocks also struggled, with Home Depot (HD) dropping 2.14% to $303.85 and Salesforce (CRM) declining 1.64%. Financial heavyweights were not immune to the pressure, as American Express (AXP) fell 1.27% and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) shed 1.12%, reflecting broader concerns over a potential economic slowdown triggered by persistent inflation.
