[DowJonesToday]Dow Jones Slumps as Manufacturing Data Weighs on Sentiment

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) was down 207.82 (-0.39%) points today, currently trading at 52,978.08, while Dow Futures (YM=F) was down 226.00 (-0.42%) points. The primary narrative driving the market lower on this Tuesday, September 1st, 2026, is a renewed concern over the health of the industrial sector following the release of weaker-than-expected ISM Manufacturing PMI data. This economic report signaled a contraction in factory activity, sparking fears that high interest rates are finally curbing capital expenditures and broader economic momentum.

Despite the overarching downward pressure, 3M Company (MMM) led the gainers, as it was up 3.70% to $148.62 following a favorable legal settlement update. Technology heavyweight Nvidia (NVDA) also showed resilience, as it was up 1.77% to $225.01, benefiting from continued institutional demand for AI-related infrastructure. Other notable performers included Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which was up 1.61%, and Cisco Systems (CSCO), which was up 1.33% to $100.48.

Conversely, the manufacturing data hit legacy tech and retail sectors particularly hard. IBM (IBM) was the session's biggest laggard, as it was down 2.42% to $213.40. Consumer-facing giants also struggled with the shifting economic outlook; Home Depot (HD) was down 2.14% to $303.85, and Salesforce (CRM) was down 1.64%. Financials were not immune to the volatility either, as American Express (AXP) was down 1.27% and JPMorgan Chase (JPM) was down 1.12% to $301.51.
